Partnership to Fight HIV/AIDS in Tanzania - PEPFAR

For two decades, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has been a cornerstone in the global fight against HIV/AIDS, with a particularly significant impact in Tanzania. This partnership, which has involved the U.S. government, the Tanzanian government, and various local and international organizations, has led to remarkable progress in combating the epidemic.

A Legacy of Progress

Since its inception in 2003, PEPFAR has played a crucial role in transforming the lives of millions of Tanzanians. Key achievements of this partnership include:

  • Saving Lives: Since 2003, PEPFAR's support has helped reduce AIDS-related deaths in Tanzania by nearly 80%, and new infections have dropped by almost 60%.

  • Expanding Treatment: The number of Tanzanians receiving life-saving antiretroviral treatment (ART) has soared from fewer than 1,000 in 2003 to more than 1.5 million today.

  • Comprehensive Care: The program has focused on a holistic approach, providing a range of services from HIV testing and prevention of mother-to-child transmission to comprehensive care and support for orphans and vulnerable children.

A Strong Partnership

The success of the PEPFAR initiative in Tanzania is a testament to the strong collaboration between the United States and its partners. The program works closely with the Tanzanian government's Ministry of Health, the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), and local organizations. This partnership model ensures that the interventions are tailored to the specific needs of communities and are sustainable for the long term.

While significant progress has been made, the fight is not over. The partnership continues to focus on closing remaining equity gaps and reaching key populations to achieve the "final mile" of epidemic control in Tanzania.
